Craft Your Current Sustainability Strategy & Plan
Now that you have an idea of what actions your organization is currently taking that could be classified as ‘environmentally sustainable’, it’s time to figure out your sustainability project.
Whether this is your first sustainability project or you already have a few under your belt prior to this program, you’ll find that this module will ensure that your project is not a one-off for the organization, and is used as a building block to a longer term sustainability strategy at your organization.
Then, on to the fun part – you get to pick your project! Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through how to do that. There is a method to ensuring that you pick the optimal project given where your organization stands today.
The last part of this module is the planning. If you’re a planner like I am, you’ll really enjoy this! You’ll figure out the steps to take to make your project a success, and the time it will require to do it, as well as who you’ll need to ask for help (if anyone).
Module Highlights:
- Identify your organization’s overall goals for the next three to five years, as these are outlined in your organization’s strategy. Do this even if you are a small shop and don’t have a stated strategy for the next few years.
- Use the assessment results from Module 1 to create a list of potential projects to focus on; you may also want to review the list of sample projects I’ve provided to give you some additional ideas.
- Complete the prioritization funnel worksheet to narrow down your project choices and to ensure that your project meets your time and budget as well as other requirements.
- Pick your project!
- Use my sustainability plan template and sample plan to create a detailed action plan to implement the project, so that you know what needs to happen when and with whom to get this project started and implemented.
Module 3
Create Excitement About Your Project
Whether you can go ahead and implement a project without getting anyone’s buy-in or need your boss’ sign-off, it’s almost always a good idea to get others on board with what you’re doing.
Why? Let me count the ways.
You want to generate excitement.
You may need data or support from other colleagues.
You’ll get others to take action on their own around the project.
You’ll create ownership and even accountability.
You’ll get the go ahead and maybe even a budget – if you need it – from your boss!

This is one of the areas that is most often overlooked when a sustainability project – or any project for that matter – is implemented.
And it is a big part of ensuring a project’s success.

- Identify the type of business case you’ll need to make based on your project, then use my worksheet to make the business case for your project – because part of getting others on board is showing the value of the project, both quantitative and qualitative
- Keep yourself inspired and excited – this is key throughout the project, to ensure follow-through and success. If you lose sight of why you’re doing this, and what the end goal is, it’s easy for this project to get de-prioritized, and we don’t want that to happen.
- Pick your leadership style from a list of six different styles (you have one, even though you may not yet see yourself as a leader), and begin working on strengthening that leadership muscle.
- Determine whether your current leadership style works for what you are trying to achieve, and if not, consciously create your new leadership style for this project.
- Discover the many ‘superpowers’ that you have at your disposal as a change agent, and which to use when to ensure that you successfully engage others in your project.
Module 4
Implement and Move Past Roadblocks
Now that your project has been identified, you’ve created a plan, and you’ve started bringing others on board, it’s time to implement your project.
Congratulations on getting to the starting line! You’ve done a lot of prep work and now it’s time for the real action to begin!
As you may know, if you’ve been a part of, or managed, projects in the past, the road from start to finish isn’t always smooth, and may not always go as planned.

This module focuses not only on the implementation – which really means following the plan you outline in Module 2, but also on identifying potential obstacles that may come your way, so that you can blow past them and not get derailed.

You are well on your way!
